AMD Benchmarks Bulldozer Against Intel’s Core i5 And i7 posted on: Sat, 09/17/2011 - 02:29
In a mini press event during this week’s IDF, AMD ran
two live tests to benchmark and compare its soon-to-be-released
FX-series Bulldozer CPU against Intel’s current offering of Core i5 and
Core i7 CPUs.
For the first benchmark, AMD used an
undisclosed eight-core AMD FX processor and an unspecified Intel Core i5
Sandy Bridge CPU to convert a 5-minute H.264 video in SD resolution.
The Bulldozer processor achieved the task with an average of 223 frames
per second, while the Core i5 machine achieved an average of 188 fps.
AMD
didn’t give any details about the two processors used in the benchmark
beyond the fact that the AMD FX is an eight-core and the Core i5 is a
quad-core. The company stressed that both CPUs are of comparable prices.
For
the second test, AMD pit another unnamed AMD FX CPU against an Intel
Core i7 980X. Both CPUs were put in a system with two Radeon HD 6790
cards setup in CrossFire and used to play Dirt 3 at 2560x1600
resolution.
The game ran at an average frame rate of 80.9 fps on the Intel-powered machine and 82.8 fps on the AMD FX-powered one.
