Windows:
Only Windows Server 2003 supports large page memory. In order to use it, the administrator must first assign additional privilege to the user who will be running the application:
select Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy
select Local Policies -> User Rights Assignment
double click "Lock pages in memory", add users and/or groups
reboot the machine
Note the above steps are needed even if it's the administrator who will be running the application, as administrators by default do not have the privilege to lock pages in memory.
Actually it very simple to do and takes about 30 seconds to do the changes on the OS and then a re-boot and you have a 15% performance boost. I do think that it only works on 64bit OS though, and you should have enough RAM on your system.
>1. there is a need for crystal-clear instructions how to enable 'large pages', which conditions, how to do
Hi,
That is pretty simple and there are a few ways to go, one easy way is below
1. On the Start menu, click Run. In the Open box, type gpedit.msc.
The Group Policy dialog box opens.
2. On the Group Policy console, expand Computer Configuration, and then expand Windows Settings.
3. Expand Security Settings, and then expand Local Policies.
4. Select the User Rights Assignment folder.
The policies will be displayed in the details pane.
5. In the pane, double-click Lock pages in memory.
6. In the Local Security Policy Setting dialog box, click Add.
7. In the Select Users or Groups dialog box, add an account with privileges to run sqlservr.exe.
