Houdini 1.01 includes some bug fixes, and a couple of improvements that make it about 20 Elo stronger than the previous version.
The most important bug fixes are:
- The 4/8-core versions now use the intended number of cores (unlike the 8_CPU version of the previous release…);
- Hash tables larger than 1024 MB no longer crash the engine.
By popular request a new 4_CPU version is available which has been tuned extensively and should perform very well. On a Core i5-750 @ 2.66 GHz processor the 64-bit 4_CPU version will typically reach about 6.5 Mnps in middle game positions, or about 25 billion positions/hour.
Additionally there are new 64-bit "POPCNT" versions for recent platforms supporting SSE4.2 (Core i7, Core i5 etc.) that run slightly faster than the standard versions.
In cutechess-cli matches of 1000 fast games against other top engines on a 64 bit platform using 2 cores, time control 40/10 (typically reaching 13/14 plies), Houdini 1.01 performed as follows:
Code:
- Houdini 1.01 - Stockfish 1.7.1: +472 -175 =353 (64.8 %, +106 Elo)
- Houdini 1.01 - Ivanhoe-63: +256 -164 =580 (54.6 %, +32 Elo)
- Houdini 1.01 - Fire 1.31: +449 -113 =438 (66.8 %, +121 Elo)
The first two results are quite in line with expectations, whereas the Fire 1.31 match result is very surprising (but was confirmed in a second match) and most certainly doesn't reflect the true difference in strength between the engines.
As always, your mileage may vary.

Thank you Rybka 4 sucks
